Breakfast with Darren Jarman
A great morning with one of
footballs finest

Youth leaders
from around South Australia
had the privilege of meeting together on Wednesday Morning 27th of
February and hearing an encouraging word from football legend Darren Jarman. Darren
grew up living and breathing football and in the process he learnt many
valuable lessons through both his amature and professional career with North
Adelaide, Hawthorn and the Adelaide Crows. Sharing personal stories Darren gave
a real insight into key aspects of leadership, that were applicable to all
walks of life, whether you are a football coach, captain, pastor or youth group
leader.
Darren shared
his firm belief that everyone can be a leader. It’s not where you come from but
the actions you take towards others and the way you represent yourself amongst
others. Discipline was a key aspect of Darren’s career. He said that if you want to achieve you must
be prepared to put in what it will take. Darren openly spoke of his experiences
and that if it was not for others around him who pushed him, encouraged and
disciplined him he could not have achieved as he did.
Like wise he aims to give young footballers
the same opportunities, as Darren became apart of the leadership at North Adelaide football club he again saw the importance
of and the fruit of discipline. The leadership at North Adelaide Football Club team
worked to create a great culture at the club, which is seeing many young
footballers flocking to the club with success on and off the field.
A good
footballer is concerned not only with themselves but with the team. Darren
said, “Everyone is responsible to the team”. A team must be united, keeping the
same core values and principles in order to work together towards the same
outcome. Amongst all this Darren emphasised the importance of training; in hard
times or during a challenging game, Darren personally found himself coming back
to and relying on his training.
“Every good leader takes risks”, he
acknowledge that sometimes they pay off, and other times they don’t, but a good
leader will hold their head high and say, I gave it a go! Amongst the church
today we need to start taking risks, on people, on the way we think about and
do ministry. In the end Darren says, all we are called to do, “Is to do the
best you can”, that is all that is required of you and if you have done the
training, been disciplined, your best will be premiership material!
Darren exhibited
a great humility and shared of the faith that his family has come to know in God. Our breakfast with Darren Jarman was a true
highlight where we were treated to 70 minutes of quality insight, life lessons
and great stories.
